EO Working Together Interview Example About Resolving Team Conflict

Conflict within a team can provide strong EO Working Together evidence when your answer shows how you restored cooperation and protected delivery. Get the Your Guide to Passing Executive Officer (EO) Civil Service Interviews before your interview so you can compare your example with grade-level questions and prepare the detail the panel is likely to test.

Question

“Tell me about a time when you helped resolve conflict within a team.”

What Is Being Looked For

At EO level, Working Together includes listening with genuine interest, supporting an inclusive environment and changing ways of working to improve cooperation. The panel needs to hear how you understood each position and kept the discussion respectful. Your answer should also show what you personally did to move the team towards a shared result.

Use B-STAR to begin with a short belief about handling disagreement. Keep the Situation and Task brief. Spend most of the answer on your actions, including the conversations you held, the information you checked and the practical agreement you created. A meeting on its own provides limited evidence. The important part is how your approach changed what people did afterwards.

Keep blame out of the example. Explain the effect of the conflict on the work and acknowledge any valid concern held by each person. The result should cover delivery and the working relationship. A clear process, agreed responsibility or reliable communication route helps prove that the improvement lasted.

Example Answer

I believe team conflict should be addressed early and calmly. People are more likely to cooperate when they feel heard and can see how their work contributes to the same outcome.

As an EO in a casework team, I worked with two experienced officers who disagreed about how urgent cases should be allocated. One wanted cases shared equally, while the other believed specialist cases should remain with the most experienced staff. Their disagreement had become visible in team meetings and was delaying allocation at the start of each day.

I spoke to each officer separately and asked them to explain the risk they were trying to manage. The first was concerned about fairness and workload. The second was worried that complex cases would be reassigned several times and delay customers. I reviewed two weeks of allocation data and found that the team needed both a fair workload and a clearer route for specialist cases.

I brought the officers together and set the shared objective as allocating every urgent case quickly with clear ownership. I proposed a rotating lead for routine urgent work and a short list of specialist case types that would go directly to trained officers. I asked both colleagues to test the categories against recent cases. Their comments helped remove one unclear category and add a review point for workloads.

I documented the agreement, explained it at the next team meeting and checked the allocations each morning for the first week. I also invited the two officers to raise any issue with the process privately so the team discussion stayed constructive.

Urgent cases were allocated within the team target throughout the trial. Reassignments reduced, workloads stayed balanced and the two officers began using the data to resolve later questions without personal tension. The team manager adopted the process as the normal allocation method.

Prepare the point where your actions changed the working arrangement and use your own experience. Use the Your Guide to Passing Executive Officer (EO) Civil Service Interviews before the interview to test the answer against further EO Working Together questions and make sure the result shows lasting cooperation.
