Problem Solver is a Civil Service strength based on taking a positive approach to problems and identifying suitable solutions. The Grade 6 / 7 strength interview guide shows how to present this as a natural senior working style rather than a prepared project story. Use it before your interview so the structure and evidence are ready when the panel begins probing.
Question
“When a problem first becomes visible and there is no clear answer, what tends to shape how you engage with it?”
What Is Being Looked For
The panel is listening for capability, genuine engagement and frequent use. At Grade 6 or Grade 7, problem solving should sound comfortable at a level where causes are unclear and several parts of the organisation may be involved.
Start with your instinctive response. You might feel curious about ambiguity and want to understand the real cause before choosing a solution. Explain how you create structure, test assumptions and bring the right people into the work.
A short example should support the strength without becoming a long B-STAR answer. Focus on what energised you and how your approach moved the issue forward. Senior strength evidence should also show awareness of consequence and system impact.
Speak naturally and stay consistent with the rest of your interview. The guide’s scoring model rewards high use and high affinity, so your answer should sound like a regular part of how you lead.
Your short example should show how you behave before a solution is obvious. Describe the questions you ask and the structure you create. The panel can then hear that the strength applies during ambiguity, not only after the answer is known.
Include the point where you decide to stop investigating and move towards testing a solution. This shows that curiosity leads to action and does not become endless analysis.
Example Answer
I tend to lean into problems where the cause is unclear. Ambiguity makes me curious, and I enjoy creating enough structure for people to understand what is really happening. My first step is usually to define the outcome affected and separate symptoms from possible causes.
I use this strength regularly in senior delivery work. Recently, several teams reported different reasons for a fall in service completion. I brought the evidence into one view, compared where users left the process and tested the main assumptions with operational and digital leads. The pattern showed that the problem came from the interaction between guidance and one system step rather than a single team’s performance.
I found the work engaging because each piece of evidence narrowed the issue and helped people move away from fixed positions. I led the teams to test a revised route with a small user group, then used the results to shape the permanent change.
Problem solving is a genuine strength for me. I use it often, particularly where people need a clear way through complexity, and I feel energised when a difficult issue becomes something the organisation can act on.
Use a truthful example that shows your usual relationship with complex problems. The Grade 6 / 7 strength interview guide contains further Problem Solver questions, scoring guidance and senior sample answers before you finalise your preparation.
