Challenging senior leaders can provide strong Grade 6 Communicating and Influencing evidence when the challenge is purposeful, evidence-led and linked to a decision. The Grade 6 and Grade 7 Civil Service interview guide contains senior-level questions that test judgement and credibility. Use it before your interview so the structure and evidence are ready when the panel begins probing.
Question
“Tell me about a time when you challenged senior leaders and influenced them to change their preferred approach.”
What Is Being Looked For
The panel wants to understand how you judged that challenge was necessary and how you chose an approach suited to the audience. At Grade 6, this should involve a material issue and a clear understanding of the wider organisational context.
Use B-STAR to explain your belief about constructive challenge and the decision at stake. The action should cover how you built the evidence, anticipated concerns and framed the message. Senior leaders need a clear recommendation rather than a problem with no route forward.
Influence can involve changing the decision, securing added controls or agreeing a staged route. Explain how you handled questions and adapted without weakening the core message. Respectful challenge remains direct.
The result should show what leaders decided and how your communication improved the outcome. Include the effect on delivery or risk where it can be supported.
Prepare for follow-up questions about the relationship after the challenge. Senior influence includes preserving enough trust to continue delivery. Explain how you kept the discussion focused on outcomes and worked with the leaders once the decision was made.
Example Answer
I believe senior leaders should receive clear challenge when evidence shows that the preferred route creates an avoidable risk. The challenge should come with practical options and a recommendation.
As a Grade 6 delivery lead, I was responsible for readiness advice on a national service release. The leadership team preferred a full launch to meet a public milestone. Final testing showed that the main journey worked, but a failure in the assisted route could leave vulnerable users without a usable alternative.
I consolidated the test evidence and separated minor defects from the issue that affected service access. I met the operations lead to confirm the likely customer impact and asked the technical team to estimate the time needed for a reliable fix. I then prepared options covering full launch, delay and a phased release.
At the senior meeting, I stated the risk in customer terms and explained why the existing mitigation did not protect the affected group. I acknowledged the importance of the milestone and recommended opening the stable digital route while holding the assisted route until the fix passed assurance. When challenged on reputational impact, I showed how the phased message could be communicated honestly and how the milestone could still be met in part.
The leadership team approved the phased release and added an independent readiness check before the second route opened. The stable service launched on time, and the assisted route followed after the defect was resolved.
Use an example where your evidence and delivery changed a senior decision or its controls. The Grade 6 and Grade 7 Civil Service interview guide includes further Communicating and Influencing questions and senior answers before you finalise your preparation.
