How to Improve an EO Civil Service Behaviour Statement With Weak Evidence

A weak EO behaviour statement often describes a useful event but leaves the assessor guessing what the candidate personally decided or achieved. The EO 250-word behaviour statement guide shows how to strengthen the evidence through relevance, active wording and a clear result. Use it before your application deadline so you can compare the final draft with the relevant grade-level method.

Question

“How can I turn a vague EO behaviour statement into evidence that an assessor can score?”

What Is Being Looked For

Start by checking that the example fits the behaviour and resembles the responsibilities in the job advert. A well-written story will still struggle when the evidence is unrelated. The guide recommends a recent example that has you in the driving seat and gives you enough scope to explain your decisions.

Use B-STAR as a guide. Belief should be brief. Situation and Task should establish the challenge and your responsibility. Activity should take most of the space because the assessor needs to see the exact steps you took and why. Result should show what changed and how you know.

Replace passive wording with direct ownership. “A tracker was created” hides the person responsible. “I reviewed the open work and created a tracker” gives the assessor something to score. Remove claims about being organised or proactive and show those qualities through the sequence of actions.

The sample below answers Delivering at Pace at EO level. It uses a credible workplace problem, explains the candidate’s judgement and finishes with a measurable service outcome.

Example Answer

I believe urgent delivery needs clear priorities and early action on anything that could affect the deadline.

As a business support officer, I coordinated papers for a monthly governance meeting. Two days before the deadline, several contributors had not provided their updates and the chair needed a complete pack for review. I was responsible for gathering the content, checking its quality and issuing the final version.

I reviewed the agenda and identified which papers were essential for decisions. I contacted each outstanding owner with a specific deadline and explained the impact of missing it. I created a tracker showing receipt, quality checks and actions required. This let me focus first on papers needed for decisions while progressing routine sections in parallel.

When one owner advised that their analysis would be late, I agreed a short factual update for the main pack and scheduled the full paper for the next meeting. I confirmed this approach with the chair and recorded the change. I checked every submission against the template, corrected formatting issues and returned two papers where recommendations were unclear.

I issued the pack by the agreed deadline with every decision item included. The meeting proceeded without missing information, and the tracker became the standard tool for later meetings. It reduced late submissions because owners could see their deadlines and outstanding actions earlier. The chair also asked me to brief new contributors before the next cycle, which improved their understanding of the required format and reduced avoidable rework across the team.

Use the same method to expose your own judgement and replace the details with your experience. The EO 250-word behaviour statement guide contains further examples and the final review checklist before you finalise your preparation.
