Practise the Judgement Behind the Answer
The CSJT does not simply ask you to choose one correct response.
In the scenario section, each possible action is assessed independently. More than one response can receive the same effectiveness rating.
That makes the reasoning behind the answer particularly important.
You need to understand why an action would help, why another only partly addresses the situation and why another could make matters worse.
The explanations in this pack are designed around that reasoning.
The Four Ratings You Will Practise
| Rating | What you are assessing |
|---|---|
| Effective | Would the action help deal with or resolve the situation? |
| Fairly Effective | Would it help while still leaving part of the problem unresolved? |
| Ineffective | Would the action do little to improve the situation? |
| Counterproductive | Could the action make the situation worse or create another problem? |
Example CSJT Practice Scenario
Situation
You are working with two colleagues on an urgent piece of work. One colleague has fallen behind and tells you that they are struggling to understand part of the task.
Possible action
Speak to the colleague, establish what they are struggling with and see whether a small amount of support would allow them to complete the work on time.
Suggested rating: Effective
This responds directly to the problem and looks for a proportionate way to support the colleague while keeping responsibility for their work with them.
The complete pack contains 40 scenarios covering different workplace situations. You make your own judgement first and then use the explanation to understand the suggested rating.
Work Through All 40 Scenarios
Practise the CSJT format, check your decisions and understand the reasoning behind the suggested answers.
What Types of Situations Will You Practise?
The pack contains workplace situations involving communication, priorities, colleagues, customers, quality and everyday decision-making.
The scenarios are designed to make you consider the consequences of different actions rather than simply identify the response that sounds most positive.
You will repeatedly practise distinguishing between:
- a response that deals with the main problem;
- a response that helps but does not go far enough;
- a response that achieves very little; and
- a response that risks making things worse.
Who Is the CSJT Practice Pack For?
This pack is designed for candidates who have been asked to complete the Civil Service Judgement Test as part of a Civil Service recruitment campaign.
You can use it before your test to become familiar with the effectiveness-rating format and practise assessing workplace actions carefully.
No previous Civil Service experience is required.
How to Use the Practice Questions
For each scenario, read the situation before looking at the suggested answer.
Rate each possible action independently as:
- Counterproductive
- Ineffective
- Fairly Effective
- Effective
Then compare your judgement with the suggested rating and explanation.
If your answer is different, look at the reasoning. Ask yourself what consequence, risk or benefit you interpreted differently.
This helps you improve how you approach unfamiliar scenarios rather than memorising a set of answers.

Why Practise CSJT Questions?
The effectiveness ratings can appear straightforward until you are faced with two responses that both have some merit.
Practice gives you the opportunity to slow that judgement down and work out why one response is stronger than another.
You can then apply that reasoning when you encounter different situations in the real test.
